Overview: Ecotourism is often associated with traveling to distant islands. However, in America, one of the top vacation destinations is a virtual island of unique habitat. Bordered by the ocean to the west, mountains and desert to the east, an international border fence to the south and 195 square miles of precious land providing a buffer to the Los Angeles metropolis to the north, the virtual island of San Diego is the only place in the nation considered a biodiversity hotspot for endangered fish, mammals, and plants.

Federal government data shows that most endangered species live on a surprisingly small amount of land. A Study by Princeton University and the Environmental Defense Fund showed that over half of all endangered fish species were found in only 9 counties, over half of all endangered mammals were found in only 7 counties, and over half of all endangered plants were found in only 13 counties. San Diego was the only county to be included in all three categories.

Come join us as we go behind the scenes to learn about the San Diego conservation efforts underway to protect these endangered species. We will visit with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the Birch Aquarium, and the San Diego Zoo’s conservation efforts at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. We will also learn how San Diego imports 90% of its water, much of it coming from the Colorado River and the challenges faced with the need for water conservation.

During our educational tours, we will also have plenty of time for fun as we take a safari tour at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, go on a guided hike through the National Wildlife Refuge, and Kayak through the La Jolla Ecological Reserve.
