Smoke Free advocates have been successful at encouraging most attractions in San Diego to go Smoke Free. Maintained by the American Lung Association, the Smoke Free San Diego web site lists all of the Smoke Free zones in San Diego. They also note the number, and sometimes the location, of designated smoking areas. Below, you will find an overview of what to expect in San Diego for smokers and non-smokers.
Smoke Free San Diego – Highlighted below are the basic smoke free policies you will encounter throughout San Diego County. In the left column of their web site, you will see a listing of categories such as Beaches & Parks and Outdoor Venues. Even if an attraction does not have a non-smoking policy, the amount of smoking is generally very limited. California has the 2nd lowest smoking rate of any state in the country and San Diego was cited by the Center for Disease Control as having the 3rd lowest smoking rate of any city in the country.
Beaches – The entire San Diego County coastline of beaches and parks is off limits to smoking. In most places, this includes boardwalks and fishing piers.
Parks – Most parks in San Diego County are off limits to smoking.
Restaurants / Bars – All indoor areas of restaurants and bars are off limits to smoking in California. Many restaurants and a few cities in San Diego County prohibit smoking on outdoor patios. Major Attractions – The San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, LEGOLAND, and Wave Waterpark are off limits to smoking.
Transit – All transit stations operated by the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) are off limits to smoking.
Sports Venues – Both Petco Park (San Diego Padres) and Qualcomm Stadium (San Diego Chargers and San Diego State Aztecs) are off limits to smoking.
Hotels – Several San Diego hotels are smoke free. Visit the Smoke Free San Diego web site for a list of non-smoking hotels.
Casinos – Both the Valley View Casino and the Sycuan Resort and Casino provide separate non-smoking casinos on their premises.
