Museum Month – Visit the 2nd Best Small Art Museum in the West

Another participant in Macy’s Museum Month is the Timken Museum of Art. This is an amazing gallery, especially for beginners wanting to develop an appreciation for art.

It’s free, it’s small, and the pieces are excellent. It includes over 60 paintings by old world masters that used to be housed in the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York.

The paintings were owned by the Putnam sisters who lived in San Diego and wanted to bring their collection together under one roof. Lucky for us, they brought the full collection here to San Diego.

You can read more about visiting the Timken on my San Diego Visitors web site.

So, why is this not the Best Small Art Museum in the West? Well, I think the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena qualifies as a small museum and has a leg up on us but the Timken is top notch and a must see. Besides, it’s a Free Museum!

**This post is part of a month long series highlighting unique tidbits about museums participating in the Macy’s half-off admissions sponsorship during the month of February.**
