Scripps Institution of Oceanography

scripps-institution-of-oceanographyThe Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been investigating our oceans, land, and atmosphere for over 100 years. Founded in 1903, the history of climate change gathered by this preeminent research institute is now closely followed and widely quoted in the international media as global warming has become the top news story.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography employs 1,300 staff, operates four ships and the local La Jolla Shores landmark of Scripps Pier, while providing public education through its Birch Aquarium.

Scripps Pier at the Scripps Institution of OceanographyAs a part of the University of California, San Diego, Scripps offers the most highly rated oceanography graduate program in the country. Students are exposed to over 350 projects in collaboration with over 60 countries being conducted by Scripps. This international collaboration exemplifies the worldwide respect garnered by Scripps, which has resulted in visits from luminaries such as President Clinton, Queen Elizabeth, and Emperor Hirohito.

Casual observers have the opportunity to follow the work of Scripps researchers through the Scripps Expeditions web site. You can view pictures and videos while following day-to-day accounts of activities and discoveries made by the scientists during their expeditions to volcanoes, deep ocean ridges, coral reefs, and more.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is surrounded by several other research institutes, which line the Torrey Pines Mesa. You can learn more about the institutes each Wednesday in my series about the world-class research organizations in San Diego.
