A Unique IMAX Experience

Did you know San Diego is home to the first IMAX Dome in the world? If you have never heard of IMAX, it is a specially developed film format that provides viewers a very different experience for watching movies. The difference is a much larger, crystal clear image with wraparound digital surround sound. It adds a new, closer, dimension to experiencing movies.

Image of an IMAX Control RoomSan Diego’s IMAX theater at The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park takes the experience to an even greater level. San Diego’s theater, built in 1973, was the world’s first to be built in a dome format with the projection screen wrapping around its viewers. Past films I’ve seen made me feel as if I were actually flying over the Serengeti Desert or flying an F-15 fighter jet.

Those of you who have been to the IMAX at The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center may be surprised when you travel to other cities and find their IMAX theaters are not shaped like a dome and thus do not provide the same experience we have here in San Diego. There are other IMAX Dome theaters but they are rare because of their high cost and are usually only found as part of educational institutions.

Movies must be filmed in IMAX format to fit the special screens. You can visit the IMAX Experience web site to see a list of upcoming Hollywood Movies and Entertaining Documentaries that will be filmed in IMAX format.

Our San Diego IMAX Theater allows private screenings where you can entertain guests with a collection of past IMAX movies or a movie of your own. They also offer discounted movie rates on Friday nights. The program is called Fridays at the Fleet.

If you have never been to an IMAX movie, you should definitely check it out. If you have visited our local IMAX theater, you should appreciate that it is a unique experience that only a few cities can enjoy. I’ll see you at the movies!
