San Diego County Leads the Way in Farming
by TourGuideTimYou may have had a double take on this headline. I sure did when I heard this fact from a classmate in a land planning class a few years ago.
So, I’ve finally gotten around to pulling up San Diego’s farming statistics from the San Diego County Farm Bureau. I knew we were a big producer of avocados but these other stats were eye-opening.
- There are over 6,500 farms in San Diego, making San Diego County #2 in the country for number of farms.
- We are #1 in the country for sales value of floricultural, greenhouse and sod products. (I can see this since we are home to the Carlsbad Flower Fields, which is just one of many flower fields. We also provide most of the poinsettias used for decoration during the holidays.)
- We are #10 in the country for total value of agricultural production. (They note the high value of land encourages farmers to grow high dollar value produce.)
- #1 for Avocados
- #6 for Horses
- #7 for Poultry
- #8 for Strawberries
These stats make farming the fifth largest industry in San Diego. Visit the Farm Bureau of San Diego County’s web site for more statistics.
