America’s Best Spa is in San Diego

Golden Door Spa entrance from spaflyer blogThe accolades for the Golden Door Spa in Escondido are touted in travel magazines year-after-year. It is hard to believe any one luxury spa can maintain its dominance as the premier spa destination when you consider how many new luxury spas are being built every year.

Zagat Survey once again ranked the Golden Door Spa the #1 Stand Alone Spa in the United States for 2007. Travel + Liesure named it one of the World’s Top 15 Destination Spas for 2007. Even the Zen Master of the NBA, Phil Jackson, wrote a first hand account in a 7-page article about his experience at the Golden Door. (This article may load slowly but the pictures of Phil Jackson and the description of his experience is worth the momentary delay.)

How does the Golden Door maintain this high level of ambiance and service? It sets the standard by being an innovator of holistic health and luxury spa services. Among their firsts are the implementation of Japanese gardens and Zen philosophy, creation of an exercise program with music, and the use of herbal wraps.

The Golden Door Spa is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It was founded in 1958 by Deborah Szekely as a newer, more upscale version of her original retreat named Rancho La Puerta . Her original retreat was home to the first organic garden on the West Coast. Since then, the Golden Door has stayed on the forefront of innovation in holistic health.

The web site notes, “The philosophy of Golden Door is inspired by that of ancient Japanese Honjin inns, places where royal and affluent travelers could stop to rest, rejuvenating body and spirit at the hands of attentive servants before continuing on their journey…Aptly named, Golden Door was designed to serve as a portal to mental and physical well-being, and quickly set the gold standard for the entire industry.”

It’s nice that we don’t have to endure the hassles of air travel these days to enjoy the relaxing services of the Best Spa in the United States right here in San Diego County.
