La Jolla Map for Visitors

Open and Print the La Jolla Map

Welcome to La Jolla, CA

Print the La Jolla Tourist Map for details on what to see in the Village of La Jolla and La Jolla Shores. Also print the San Diego Tourist Map to see La Jolla’s location relative to other attractions in San Diego and how to get there. You can also ask your hotel for a copy for TourGuideTim’s map. Following are details on what you will find on the maps of San Diego, La Jolla Shores, and the Village of La Jolla:

San Diego Map

The San Diego Map shows 20 miles of San Diego beaches from Coronado to Torrey Pines. It includes which exits to use to visit Pacific Beach, La Jolla, La Jolla Shores, and Torrey Pines. Alongside the Map of San Diego are things to do in La Jolla and special offers for the Birch Aquarium, the Torrey Pines Golf Shop, and Kayak Tours.

La Jolla Shores Map

The La Jolla Shores Map shows the main beach area serving the La Jolla Ecological Reserve. This is the area for kayaking or snorkeling with Hike Bike Kayak, SCUBA diving, taking a surf lesson with Surf Diva, going for a long walk on the beach, visiting the Birch Aquarium, and finishing up with a great meal at Piatti.

La Jolla Shores is 12.5 miles or about a 22 minute drive north of downtown San Diego. It is between Torrey Pines to the north and the Village of La Jolla to the southwest.

Directions to La Jolla Shores

Take the La Jolla Village Drive exit off highway I-5, go west 1 mile and make a left on Expedition Way. For GPS, use the Birch Aquarium at 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla CA 92037. From here, you can continue downhill on Downwind Way and make a left on La Jolla Shores Drive. Proceed to the 2nd traffic light and make a right on Avenida de la Playa to access the main business district and La Jolla Shores Beach.

If you are heading northbound on I-5 from downtown San Diego, you can also exit at La Jolla Parkway, make a right at the 4th traffic light on La Jolla Shores Drive and then a left at your first traffic light on Avenida de la Playa. For GPS, use Hike Bike Kayak at 2246 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla, CA 92037.

You can also visit La Jolla Shores on my La Jolla Tour or take the #30 bus from Old Town (also from downtown San Diego on weekdays) and get off at the stop between Paseo Dorado and Avenida de la Playa.

La Jolla Village Map

Overlooking the beach in La Jolla Cove
The La Jolla Village Map shows tourists the best place to go for a walk in San Diego and get the quintessential Southern California experience.

Walk along La Jolla Cove to watch the sea lions, pelicans, and cormorants play in the same area as ocean swimmers, snorkelers, divers and tourists. Enjoy beautiful views of the beach bluffs and the famous Sunny Jim Cave. Continue south past Scripps Park to view the seals resting on Seal Rock or on the beach known as Children’s Pool.

Walk up the hill one block into the ‘Village’ for an olive oil and wine tasting at We Olive or enjoy a meal from award winning chefs seen on the Food Channel at the Nine-Ten Restaurant or George’s at the Cove. There is a wide range of dining options including the Girard Gourmet, where the owners bring the produce from their own farm to make soups, sandwiches, and European-style baked goods.

Afterwards, browse through dozens of art galleries, including the Contemporary Fine Arts Gallery, MANGELSEN – Image of Nature, Glass Reveries and Carlton Gallery. Or, visit the dozens of boutique shops such as Fresh Produce Clothes, a national brand name that originated at a local La Jolla eatery, and Warwick’s Bookstore & Gifts, which has been run by the same family since 1896.

This is just a sampling of the things to do in La Jolla. Be sure to plan plenty of time for your visit.

Directions to La Jolla Village

La Jolla seals at Children's PoolHeading north from downtown San Diego, the easiest route is to exit I-5 at La Jolla Parkway, which will become Torrey Pines Road. (Continue straight.)

Heading south from North County San Diego, exit I-5 at La Jolla Village Drive and head west until reaching Torrey Pines Road, where you will make a left turn. Torrey Pines Road will eventually turn right as it merges with La Jolla Parkway.

For parking and those entering GPS coordinates, use 1055 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037 as your destination. There is free street parking but most spots have time limits between 1 – 3 hours and can sometimes be hard to find. Most surface lots are private parking lots. At the corner of Herschel and 1055 Wall Street, there is a convenient underground parking garage that is inexpensive and in walking distance of the attractions. If you are driving into the Village on Torrey Pines Road, turn right on Herschel, continue 2.5 blocks and you will see the parking lot on your left just before reaching Wall Street.

Additional Ways to Visit La Jolla – The best way to visit La Jolla is to join me for a small group sightseeing tour, San Diego’s top rated bus and walking tour on Trip Advisor. You can also take Bus #30 from Old Town (also from downtown San Diego on weekdays) and get off just as the bus turns from Girard Avenue onto Silverado Street. A one-way taxi ride from downtown San Diego is about $41, not including tip.

Insider Tip – Three potential points of confusion:

  1. La Jolla is pronounced ‘La Hoya’.
  2. Among locals, the tourist area described above is known as the ‘Village’. There is a separate area 4 miles northeast of the ‘Village’ known as ‘La Jolla Village’, which is the retail district serving the university (UCSD) just off I-5 at La Jolla Village Drive.
  3. There are both sea lions (generally north of Scripps Park) and seals (generally south of Scripps Park). Yes, they can be seen year-round.

Get to Know La Jolla

Scripps Park La JollaYou are bound to fall in love with La Jolla. I serve guests on public, group, and private sightseeing tours of La Jolla and get to see first-hand the reaction of visitors as they set eyes on some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere. Well-traveled guests have compared the views to those seen on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, the island of Majorca in Spain, and Capetown in South Africa.

A number of guests have stayed in touch as they make plans to move to La Jolla after falling in love with the area during the tour. If you see this happening to you, contact Michelle Silverman, a La Jolla Real Estate Expert who focuses on relocations. So, get to know some of the places I mentioned earlier and labeled on the map by browsing through the quick overviews below. At the bottom of each section for the Village, La Jolla Shores and Torrey Pines, I also mention several other things to see and do. Enjoy!
